Tsunami Victims prey to Crime from Asia to Europe
via
Tales from the Darkside
Quotes from article:
"We have received reports of incidents of rape, gang rape, molestation and physical abuse of women and girls in the course of unsupervised rescue operations and while resident in temporary shelters," the Women and Media Collective group said.
Save the Children warned that youngsters orphaned by the tsunami were vulnerable to sexual exploitation. "The experience of earlier catastrophes is that children are especially exposed," said its Swedish chief, Charlotte Petri Gornitzka.
Gangs pillage tsunami villages,
Quotes:
"Across South Asia, there have been reports of body-snatchers stealing corpses from hospitals, lopping off fingers and ears for the jewelry and ransoming off the rest to desperate relatives."
"Even famously law-abiding Sweden and Norway have been hit by scammers who have robbed and looted the homes of tourists who vanished in the chaos."
"In Sri Lanka, a 17-year-old girl whose parents drowned was gang-raped by six men just hours after she safely washed ashore. Human rights groups there reported that gangs of rapists were roaming shelters in the capital, Colombo, and attacking young girls."
Airport Closing Hurts Tsunami Aid Efforts
The main airpot in Indonesia was closed after a cargo plane hit a herd of cows on the runway. Unfortunately heavy equipment needed to move the plane will not be available until late Tuesday. The airport had been receving round the clock aid flights which have been stopped. Helicopters are still able to land at the airport though. The article ends rather ominously:
"Though about $2 billion has been pledged in aid, the U.N. secretary-general warned that some nations may not honor their promises.
"At the end of the day we will not receive all of it," Annan said. "
Limitations Frustrate Tsunami Scientists
Story on how the scientists didn't know as much we think they knew. They knew that an earthquake had happened but because their is no tsunami system in the Indian ocean they only know that there was an underwater earthquake. Considering it was an 8.0 earthquake that was reported one would think some preemptive action would have been taken. A bulletin was put out that an earthquake was detected but it was only sent to member countries.

Architecture for Humanity / WorldChanging Tsunami Reconstruction Appeal
This is a really interesting project. The group is involved in reconstruction projects, where using pro-bono work and materials, houses are built for $2000. Initially the goal was to raise $10,000 to built 6 or so houses. After being picked up on various blogs the group managed to raise $50,000, which was enough for a dozen homes, a small clinic and a school. Given their success they are now hoping to raise $100,000 and use it to built a small community including schools, medical clinics and infrastructure.
Elephants Saved Tourists from Tsunami
"Agitated elephants felt the tsunami coming, and their sensitivity saved about a dozen foreign tourists from the fate of thousands killed by the giant waves. "
"Those with tourists aboard headed for the jungle-clad hill behind the resort beach where at least 3,800 people, more than half of them foreigners, would soon be killed. The elephants that were not working broke their hefty chains. "

Girl saved tourists thanks to school lesson
More coverage about the girl that saved a beach and a hotel because she recognized that a tsunami was on the way. The 10 year old British girl said "There were bubbles and the tide went out all of a sudden. I recognised what was happening and had a feeling there was going to be a tsunami. I told mummy." Lucky for all those on the beach that Tilly had paid attention in her class. Her teacher said "Tilly is a very bright, level-headed girl ... it is an incredible coincidence that our class were learning about this type of tsunami just two weeks before Christmas."

Family dog saves boy from tsunami waves
Another mother was faced with a decision over which of her sons to save. She grabbed the youngest and assumed the oldest would be able to outrun the waves. Instead he went to their house only 40m from the shore. The family dog went after the boy, dragged him out of the house and brought the child to safety.
"That dog grabbed me by the collar of my shirt," the boy said from under some trees at Pondicherry University, where the family is waiting for relief. "He dragged me out."

Elephants Help Clear Debris in Thailand
"While heavy machinery works on the tangled wreckage that used to be posh seafront resorts, some areas are too muddy or hilly for anything other than 4 foot drive. So the Wang Chang elephant farm in the 17th-century Thai capital of Ayuddhaya offered to send in its best pachyderms. They arrived by truck Sunday in Phang Nga and got to work immediately - after a quick shower to cool off in the tropical heat."
"The animals made quick work of huge muddy clumps of plant material and didn't need much more time to handle the heavy utility pylons. Then, after a little lunch, they were ready to start the next task."
