NASA releases
a series of emails that show discussion of the damage that could have been done to the space shuttle. The suggestion that seems plausible is that the debris was actually ice (rather than foam) which would have caused significantly more damage to the orbiter. What was interesting was the comment that if the tiles were not smooth (i.e. turbulence), the aerodynamics of the shuttle would be such that the tiles would burn off even if they were still on intact.

Ripped from Metafilter.com:
The story about the baby, whether or not you have thought about having kids this site is a riot. He claims that he is collecting two baby albums. Baby album A for show to friends, relatives etc. and Baby album B, the "horror show" to be kept for personal pleasure and for show to boyfriends he really doesn't like. He documents his first words to his daughter "Hello, Cordelia. Welcome to the world. It's not going to get much better." as well as the
baby bassinet he set up with the assorted tools (i.e. hammer and nails) to keep his daughter occupied. Great stuff, one of the more hilarious quotes
"I then found that she had shat out, conservatively, 70% of her body weight. The waste product flowed around the diaper like the wind passes by a stick. I had to cross myself. It was majestic. ... So it was obvious what I had to do next. I got the camera and took some pictures. Someday, Cordelia will bring home a boyfriend I don't like."

Apparently one of the more successful precursors to SaveKaryn.com was the
SendMeADollar.com site, send a dollar and you get a link and some traffic for your site. I have to say after having seen a lot of begging sites, people need to
lighten up! I think you really need to add the humor element in with the need element and make sure you don't sound pathetic or overdramatic in the process. Anyone can say they have the worst situation in the world, so I think to be convincing you have to admit that maybe your situation isn't that bad etc.
I think people probably don't realize the work (i.e. marketing, updates etc) that goes on behind the scene. If you check out
LetMeStayForADay.com people will probably realize that they need to put in an order of magnitude more effort in getting the word out. I think Karyn being a TV producer probably helped her land some great media attention, and same for the guy behind
LetMeStayForADay.com who also had some media experience, they understood what the media wanted (in essence what people wanted) and were able to deliver that.
Great quote from
About.com Worst of the Web: "
It's almost astounding that, with so many scams, and, for that matter, legitimate charities on the Net, it's a financially irresponsible woman's formerly uncontrollable desire for Gucci handbags that finally gets people to open their wallets"
Another set of web begging links, the
You're my angel webring
Buy Mariah and Katie Breasts!
And of course it had to happen, girls asking for breast implants who don't have clothes on and are willing to meet you for $2k and travel. Its sort of like
giveboobs.com but instead of giving money to someone who already has it
("I have almost enough money to buy my own boobs right now, even without the 'boob fund."), you are giving money to girls who already have boobs. Admittedly on the small side, but they are not that bad.
